More than 80 million people suffer from chronic halitosis or bad breath. In most cases bad breath comes from the gums and tongue. The cause is bacteria in the mouth, food scraps, other debris in the mouth, and poor oral hygiene.
The main cause of bad breath is poor oral hygiene. Bad breath is also experienced by people who have infections in the oral cavity, respiratory infections, diseases such as diabetes, lung disease, kidney failure, liver disorders, smoking, xerostomia / dry mouth.
There are some bad breaths that are considered normal, which is not considered a disorder / disease. An example is “morning mouth”, occurs due to changes in the mouth while sleeping. Saliva / saliva plays an important role in the mouth that controls bad breath because it helps clean up the leftovers and bacteria that are the main cause of bad breath. While sleeping, the salivary glands reduce the production of saliva water so that bacteria can easily multiply. Your mouth becomes dry, dead cells stick to the tongue and inside the cheeks. When bacteria eat the dead cells, they produce an unpleasant smell.
To avoid “morning mouth” eat breakfast and brush your teeth. For those who avoid breakfast, be careful, because bad breath can appear again even if you’ve brushed your teeth! In addition, bad breath can also be caused by external factors such as food. For example, the aroma of coffee can survive on a person’s breath for up to 72 hours after digestion. Onions are absorbed by the stomach, but the smell is removed through the lungs. Research shows garlic being rubbed on the soles of the feet, the aroma can be recognized by the breath.
It is important to practice oral hygiene such as: brushing and flossing at least 2 times a day. By brushing your teeth correctly, including cleaning the tongue, cheeks and palate, will remove bacteria and food particles. With flossing can eliminate the accumulation of bacteria, plaque and food remaining between the teeth. To remove the odor, clean your teeth with a toothbrush or a tongue cleaner. Chewing sugar-free gum can also control bad breath. If you use dentures, retainers, or mouthguards, clean them completely before re-using them. If you feel you have bad breath, your dentist can help determine the cause. Visit your dentist regularly, at least 6 months to detect any disturbance in your oral cavity.
